Just a few days ago, Ryan applied for a position as a bouncer at one of the local discos. He had studied karate, gatka, ninjitsu, aikido, and judo for four years; he was a personal trainer; he took daily minerals, supplements, and vitamins; he was into healthy eating and health foods; and he seemed well suited for such a job. When Ryan received the announcement that he had been picked for the job, he was extremely pleased. Due to the fact that this was a special club, however, he had to go through a three week training class.
On the very first day of class, the lecturer started talking about people who drink in an excessive manner and what the bouncers, bartenders, and barmaids should do when this state of affairs arises. When the instructor started discussing alcohol poisoning, Ryan was pleased to find out that all of the new barmaids, bartenders, and bouncers had to learn about alcohol poisoning and what they should do when they witnessed a drinker who was manifesting alcohol poisoning symptoms or displaying the signs of alcohol poisoning.
More specifically, all the new barmaids, bartenders, and bouncers were instructed that nausea and vomiting were almost always one of the first signs of alcohol poisoning and that unconsciousness was in all probability the most highly perceptible alcohol overdose symptom or sign. The teacher also made it a point to underline the fact that alcohol overdose symptoms were messages from the brain and from the body that the individual had ingested more alcohol than his or her body can metabolize.
There were, however, quite a few other symptoms and signs of alcohol poisoning that all the new barmaids, bartenders, and bouncers were taught to recognize. For example, the class members discovered that people with alcohol poisoning often have seizures, are difficult to awaken, exhibit poor reflex responses, and they exhibit confusion.
Moreover, the class members learned that many people who have alcohol poisoning also manifest slurred speech; slow, shallow or irregular breathing; blue tinged or pale skin; and little response from painful stimuli, for instance from pinching.
To illustrate the influence that binge drinking has on alcohol poisoning, the instructor explained to the class members that a person who gets drunk just once or twice annually is, by definition, involving himself or herself in alcohol abuse. Such a person, however, is almost certainly not an alcohol dependent individual, but is most likely engaging in binge drinking. As articulated by the instructor, engaging in binge drinking even one time, sadly, can lead to an alcohol overdose that in some cases can be fatal.
The lecturer then explained to the class that the correct response for an alcohol overdose is the following: if it is assumed that a person has alcohol poisoning, call 911 and ask for immediate medical assistance, even if the individual is underage. By following this plan of action, the drinker will get the prompt alcohol poisoning treatment she or he requires.
After learning about alcohol poisoning and particularly about the signs and symptoms of alcohol poisoning, it may be pointed out, Ryan felt that he had discovered some crucial information that might save a person's life down the road. Undoubtedly, Ryan learned that knowledge of the mainstream alcohol poisoning symptoms and signs and knowing how to quickly and properly react to such signs and symptoms (by promptly calling 911 and asking for emergency medical assistance) can help a drinker avoid a fatal case of alcohol poisoning.
