A Married Couple Becomes Distressed About Their Excessive And Abusive Drinking And Questions Whether They Manifest Any Signs Of Alcohol Addiction

Lenny and Angie have been married for four years. They wanted to experience some excitement and fun before they made up their minds to have a family and so they consciously fashioned an extraordinarily active social life.

The key issue, it needs to be pointed out, is that practically everything they do with their family and friends includes drinking. For instance, all of the dinner engagements, family get-togethers, happy hours, sporting events, and parties with friends they patronize somehow involve drinking.

If they were responsible or moderate drinkers this wouldn't be a major issue. Since they drink rather heavily, nevertheless, they are starting to notice some noticeable alcohol-related difficulties in their lives.

For instance, just a few days ago Lenny was placed under arrest for his first DWI and has been ignoring responsibilities at work due to alcohol-related health problems. Moreover, Lenny's last three performance reviews at work have been less than adequate and he has begun to forget what he says or does when he drinks. Finally, Lenny has been experiencing sleep-related problems and his family has begun to display some disquiet about his drinking behavior.

Angie, on the other hand, has been feeling dejected about life in general and to come to grips with these feelings, she has been drinking more than any time in the past six months. Furthermore, Angie has been getting more than a few headaches and suffering from very bad hangovers after drinking. As a final point, Angie has been feeling much less energetic in the morning, she has been getting to work late every Monday, and she has been getting some strong criticism from her friends, coworkers, relatives, and family members about her unhealthy and abusive drinking.

One Tuesday evening while watching the television, Angie and Lenny stumbled upon a TV special about alcohol facts and alcoholism facts in general and about alcoholism signs in particular. This TV program was a real source of revelation to Angie and Lenny because many of the alcohol facts that were emphasized gave them the impression that they were directly associated with many of the drinking difficulties Lenny and Angie had been experiencing.

With thoughts of the television program still imprinted in her mind, Angie asked Lenny if some of the alcohol addiction signs they have been exhibiting could mean that they are dependent on alcohol or possibly becoming addicted to alcohol. Lenny didn't know the answer to Angie's question and so he recommended that they make an appointment with one of the physicians at the nearby alcohol treatment clinic to find out more about the seriousness of their drinking problems.

Ironically, although their drinking behavior hadn't yet changed, it was evident that Lenny and Angie were at least addressing their drinking difficulties, they were excited about finding out more about their drinking behavior, and they were concerned about how they could appreciably decrease or do away with the drinking-related problems that had started to deteriorate even further.

When Angie and Lenny went to bed that evening, they came to a decision that the next morning, Lenny would call and make an appointment for both of them at the substance abuse rehabilitation center located in the middle of town. After they made a promise to one another that they would do whatever it takes to triumph over the alcohol-related problems that had materialized in their lives, they actually had the most peaceful night's sleep they could bring to mind in the last three weeks.
