Emily was a thirty-three-year-old fashion designer who was fed up with feeling depressed everyday and fed up with her careless drinking behavior. Simply put, she was sick of feeling tired every morning, she was angry with herself for spending her hard-earned money on a valueless habit, she was tired of going through failed relationship after failed relationship because of her irresponsible drinking, she missed her old drive for doing various things she enjoyed, and she hated the hangovers she went through on a regular basis.
Besides the noticeable alcohol-related health difficulties she was experiencing, possibly the most regretful part of her drinking routine was the unreliable and deceitful person she had become. In her heart of hearts she realized that she had been dishonest about her drinking behavior to her relatives, family, and friends and she also knew she had been lying to herself about the "positive" effects of drinking. Not only this but she justified guzzling three or four alcoholic beverages before going to social events and she also made excuses for needing one or two drinks as soon as she got up so that she could cope with the "pressures" at work. Simply put, Emily got to the point in her life during which she understood that she hit a low point in life and was now ready to begin the slow climb back to health.
One of basic ways that Emily put her "plan" into action was by asking for a transfer at work. When her request was approved by top management, she moved 550 miles away to a new location. If nothing else, this unquestionably made making new friends and dissociating herself from her old pals easier. Then she contacted a physician in her new location city and scheduled an appointment for a comprehensive physical exam.
After meeting with the healthcare practitioner and going through a number of lab tests, it was determined that Emily had made the transition from alcohol abuse to alcohol addiction and therefore, really needed alcohol detox and alcohol therapy. At this difficult time, the physician made it a point to discuss the various alcoholic symptoms and the common symptoms of alcoholism. In addition to focusing a lot of attention on Emily's alcoholism symptoms, her healthcare practitioner also told Emily that it was decided that she was clinically depressed and in need of treatment for this medical condition.
Due to her willingness to follow through with the treatment program, after three weeks of residential rehabilitation, Emily was ready to start rehabilitation on an outpatient basis. At this point, she started working at her new job and over the weeks began fortifying her body by eating nutritious foods, working out, drinking distilled water, taking vitamins, and living an alcohol-free lifestyle.
After around twelve weeks of outpatient rehab during which time she never experienced a relapse, Emily stopped going to alcohol treatment and instead started going three times per week to local Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Attending these meetings helped Emily maintain her alcohol-free style of life, they gave her the support she needed, and they served as a constant reminder of the adverse consequences that are associated with abusive drinking. Compared with her life less than a year ago, life was now enjoyable and loaded with potential that she could have never hoped for or realized while she was involved in abusive drinking behavior.
