I'm often amazed to see the how majestic and outrageous the clothing industry has turned into. For some reason it's tough for me to fathom people and their utter love for clothing. Don't misunderstand me! I like a good pair of pants as much anyone, but you will not catch me forking out hundreds of bucks for a pair of jeans, or even for plus size coats, which can be costly. Forget that. Not that my preferences have any effect on the style industry what-so-ever. Oodles of young people are attending fashion design and marketing colleges to better learn the business. Hey, I can't say that I blame them. There is a whole lot of money to be made there. I am fairly certain Tom Ford is hungry these days.
When I asked my teen-age daughter what field she wanted to pursue, she started rambling on about fashion styling and marketing. Hmm, big shock! Regrettably she detested it. Now she is a bit torn regarding her future plans. She still dreams of a job in the clothing industry, but is naturally worried about whether or not she'll like it. I told her to give fashion styling and marketing another shot when she heads off to college next year. And no one said she had to delve into this specific aspect of the style industry. There are a few options out there. She could market bathing suits, jeans, evening wear, plus size coats, wedding attire, avant garde fashion...the possibilities are endless.
It is certainly a challenging business. If you truly want to see the way things work, look at the Style network occasionally in order to see real fashion designers in their element. Or you can watch that little reality tv series "The Hills." Although the main person in this show has plenty of money coming in from her parents, she's getting a fine dose of the fashion design and merchandising world. You can see her working as an intern for "Teen Vogue" and get a good idea of what is expected of her. It is definitely not all glam and glitz from the beginning, but I am sure any lucrative fashion designer can tell you that. You've to be willing to work really hard and compete with the many. The best place to begin is a highly recommended fashion styling school.
