Tiny Breed Dog Training

Precisely why dog lovers possess this preconceived belief that small breed dogs are more challenging to train than medium sized or large breed puppies, I will never be able to figure out. Housebreaking a puppy, irrespective of its size should never be a problem.

Small dog training, is not all different from training a pup of any other larger sized breed. Whilst training any dog will have its peculiarities, according to its breed, almost all other facets remain the same, and the approach to training the canine should not be different, regardless its size.

With that said, I will stray from the rule here, and accept that small dog training may create complications in two areas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. However, this is not because the dog is small breed, but in every instance, because of the owner.

If a smaller breed pup is aggressive and is hard to train, or if a small breed dog cannot be crate trained or poses difficulties in being potty trained, it is the owner who has unwittingly contributed to this problem. Let us analyze how and why.

Aggression.

Tiny dogs are enjoyed because they are cute, they are like toy characters. Owners delight in having their pet sit on their laps. This indulgence is where the complication begins. The basic aggressive characteristic of the puppy, is to claim ownership over its space, its food, even its trainer; all canines want to be the alpha dog.

It is the violent streak in the dog that provokes it to jump on to the lap of its mistress, above all when there are plenty of humans gathered in the room.

This is a blatant act of hostility. Instead of chastising and checking the pup, every owner bar none, would hug the dog, even though it jumped on to their lap without being called, developing the aggressive streak in the animal. Therefore the owner has given into the pup's behavioral instinct to be the alpha dog.

Growling and getting upset at a a bigger size dog is another obvious act of violence. To the owner, and even the onlookers, this is looked on as cute, simply because one dog is small while the other is large. Most owners pet and pat the pup instead of admonishing it, when it exhibits this aggression with a larger dog.

The above are but examples as to why smaller breed pet dogs are aggressive, and not because small dog training is different or difficult.

Potty Training.

Owners are inclined to lug their small pups around no matter where they are, even at home and that renders it impossible to house break them

It is, as if by instinct that the owners of small dogs to lug the animal to the area where the pup should go to the toilet and then carry it back into the house.

It is this habit of carrying the puppy to its toilet place that is the root of all dilemmas. In addition, ever since the pup is as a general rule carried around so often it has no way of it telling or alerting the owner that it has to go the toilet.

Small dog training starts off with treating the dog as any other medium sized or larger sized dog. They have to be shown their pooping area on a leash. If owners discontinue carrying their miniature breed dogs they would have no obstacles in training them.

Dog crate training, is the most important part of dog training, and so it should be, even in Small Dog Training.
